MKVToolnix est un programme opensource qui contient une interface graphique (mkvmerge GUI) pour un ensemble d'outils pour créer, modifier et inspecter des fichiers Matroska (MKV). Matroska est un format open source de fichier conteneur qui permet de rassembler dans un seul fichier : vidéos, sous-titres, plusieurs pistes audio, etc.
MKVToolnix n'est pas un convertisseur vidéo ou audio. Il se contente simplement de créer un conteneur multimédia dans lequel on peut fusionner les formats suivants :
Pour la vidéo : Divx, Xvid, RealVideo, H.264,etc.
Pour l'audio : Vorbis, AAC, MP2, MP3, DTS, AC3, etc.
Pour les sous-titres : srt, ssa, etc.
Il permet aussi d’extraire les flux audio, vidéos et sous-titres du conteneur MKV.
MKVtoolnix permet d'analyser le contenu des fichiers Matroska et offre l'information complète sur tout le contenu (mkvinfo). En plus, il permet d'éditer les chapitres d'un film ou d'incorporer des pièces jointes.

Avidemux est un éditeur de vidéo qui permet de convertir un fichier vidéo dans un autre format, de réencoder un fichier vidéo pour lui donner une taille précise, d'effectuer plus facilement qu'avec Virtualdub du montage du montage de base (Copier, coller, applications de filtres de base, …), de joindre différents fichiers vidéos pour ne plus en créer qu'un seul. Parmi les filtres les fonctions de désentrelacement, rognage, sous titres, etc...sont disponibles.

Avidemux comprend plusieurs encodeurs vidéo : Xvid (MPEG-4 ASP), x264 (H.264 aka AVC), libavcodec (MPEG-4 ASP, MPEG-2, MPEG-1, FLV, HuffYUV, FFV1, MJPEG, H.263, DV) et mpeg2enc (MPEG-1, MPEG-2) et des encodeurs audio : LAME (MP3), FAAC (LC-AAC), Aften (AC3), Ogg Vorbis and TwoLAME (MP2).
